Committed to driving positive change in the community, David and Kate Mortenson are both civic-engaged and active community impact leaders in the Twin Cities. David is chairman of M. A. Mortenson Company, a privately-held international design and construction company specializing in everything from renewable energy to sports stadiums and hospitals to data centers. He joined the family business in 1991 and led the company’s west coast business for six years before returning to the company headquarters in 2007. He was named chairman in 2015.
Kate is President and CEO of the 2019 Minneapolis Final Four™ Local Organizing Committee, responsible for executing all aspects of the NCAA™ Men’s Basketball Championship in 2019. Previously, she was a United States Peace Corps volunteer and journalism professional at Hubbard Broadcasting.
The couple lends their experience and passion for stewardship through their involvement in multiple nonprofit boards. Kate serves on the boards of Minnesota Public Radio and The Greater Twin Cities United Way, and she has been recognized by Social Venture Partners and Minnesota Philanthropy Partners for her innovative and engaged approach to philanthropy. She is also a member of the Minnesota Women’s Economic Roundtable and the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Business Journal Women’s Leadership Council.
Outside of the office, David serves as a trustee on University of Minnesota Foundation board and as a board member on Minnesota Business Partnership. He is also a member of the Itasca Project (former Chair) and corporate director with Bedford Technologies. He served as a founding board member of GreaterMSP and as a former trustee with the Minneapolis Foundation.
